Lobbying and Advocacy 101: Legal Tips for Nonprofit Advocates
Lobbying is not only legal – it’s one of the most effective means for nonprofits to advance their missions! Whether influencing your state’s budget, protecting Medicaid, or passing marriage equality laws, there are many reasons that 501(c)(3) public charities choose to lobby to achieve their policy goals. This comprehensive workshop will help explain what lobbying is and why it is so important. Federal law allows 501(c)(3) public charities (including houses of worship and public foundations) to lobby within generous limits. This training
addresses:
 How the tax law permits lobbying for nonprofits
 One easy step most charities can take to maximize the amount they’re allowed to spend on lobbying
 Yearly lobbying limits for charities
 Tips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying – which will help charities make themost of their lobbying limit
 The application of these rules to ballot measure activities

About Cory:

Cory Smith anchors NBC 5 News weekend evenings, Saturday at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and also reports. He joined the NBC 5 News team in December 2015.

Born and raised in south Oak Cliff, Cory returns home after three years at KSAT 12, the ABC affiliate in San Antonio. During his time in the Alamo City he covered local and state politics. His passion for advocacy journalism helped taxpayers hold their elected leaders accountable. One of his proudest moments was helping low-income residents who were forced out of their mobile-home park receive financial help from the development company that obtained their land.

Cory's extensive work in the field and love of storytelling has taken him across the Lone Star State - from the explosion in West to the devastating Memorial Day floods in Wimberley.

His journey to DFW started at 6NEWS in Lawrence, Kansas where he was the station's main anchor for several years. While he misses his former colleagues in “Larry-ville”, he does not miss Midwest winters.

Cory received his degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He is also a proud graduate of Bishop Dunne High School.

When he's not inside the DFW news bubble you can usually find Cory out on the town with his wife, Kate. His love of food and craft beer is surpassed only by his unconditional (and at times irrational) love for the Cowboys, Mavs, Rangers, and Stars. Though he bleeds Northwestern purple, he proudly dons burnt orange on autumn Saturdays.

In his spare time Cory enjoys listening to music, binge-watching TV dramas, reminiscing with childhood friends and cooking.

Working at NBC 5 has been Cory's dream since he first picked up a video camera and he's ecstatic to be back home!

Five Steps to Use Diversity & Inclusion to Improve Your Bottom Line
In 2016 Techstars partnered with Chase for Business to survey more than 700 founders of tech startups from around the world to gain insight into the challenges they face when working to build a diverse and inclusive company.

The report concluded that while diversity is important to 72% of founders, only 10% are taking action, and only 23% of founders say that a diverse workforce improves financial performance. Check out techstars.com/bealeader for all of the findings.

Walk away from this session with five ways (below) to be a diversity leader in your startup & examples of how it’s impacted the bottom line of the businesses of our panelists.

1. How to hire
2. How to retain
3. How to evaluate pay
4. How to offer flexible benefits
5. How to build a diverse board and/or create a diverse mentoring program

It is my intention, and quite possibly has become my life’s work, to turn my students into global citizens.  Many of the problems we currently face in the world are due to lack of cultural tolerance and understanding.  Every summer for the past four years I have travelled abroad to both study and teach.  Each time I have brought back a wealth of information for my students.  My travels have been instrumental in implementing curriculum in my classroom.  I have studied Spanish in Cuernavaca and also travelled to Mexico City, Toluca, and Acapulco on the same trip.  I have been to Thailand, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, and I have taught ESL in China twice in summer programs.  For each of the trips, I have been able to create an in depth unit on the culture and traditions of the people who live there.  In China, I asked my students help me to create the units in an effort to create a glimpse into real Chinese life.   Last summer I traveled to Cuba to study Hemingway and improve my Spanish speaking skills.  In July, I participated in a teacher trip to Morocco hosted by the World Affairs Council and the Moroccan government.  Both of those trips became in depth units on Cuba and Morocco for my Humanities class upon my return.

Advocacy and Community Organizing: Evaluation and Capacity Building
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The most effective advocacy and community organizing work happens when groups and coalitions know where they stand and can leverage their organizational strengths to work for social change.

This presentation will:
 Introduce participants to AFJ’s free, online tools, Advocacy Capacity Tool (ACT) and Power Check for community organizing,
 Describe how they are being used
 Discussion of evaluation principles.

Using ACT, nonprofits and foundations can benchmark their advocacy skills, identify specific gaps and opportunities in their advocacy strategies, identify areas to build, efficiently focus resources for best results, and evaluate their capacity building progress.

PowerCheck makes it easy for nonprofits, evaluators, and funders to
assess their capacity for engaging in community organizing, planning successfully, and tracking capacity building progress over time.

State of Schools + Social Capital: A New Paradigm

Join this discussion on diversity, retention and evidence of why social capital (champions, sponsors, mentors) matters and just how important it is that beyond academics’ professionals are prepared for the STEM Workforce. Diversity in STEM matters to compete globally in the workforce. There is currently a strong emphasis in increasing interest in STEM in K-12 Education. However, it is equally important to increase the pipeline of students who actually graduate with college degrees in STEM and stay within the field after graduation.

Current statistics show there needs to be some immediate discussion surrounding retention and diversity in the STEM Workforce: 84 Percentage of working professionals currently in science and engineering jobs in the U.S who are white or Asian males. (Source: National Science Foundation) Women in science and technology jobs, according to Harvard Business Review, are also 45 percent more likely than their male peers to leave the industry within a year as a result of what they consider a hostile work environment.
